Oha soup (Ofe Ora)

Oha soup is one of the most popular delicacies which is native to the people of the south eastern part of Nigeria. I really don't know how to describe the Unique taste of Ora soup but one sure thing i can say is, it is Simply delicious. The only distinguishing factor between Ora and Utazi or bitter leaf soup is the Vegetable used in the preparation. While Other leaves can be found all year round, Ora leaves are seasonal and is mostly available during the dry/harmattan season.

Ofe Utazi

I remember back in the day during my high school years, "Visiting day" was always my favorite time of the month. At first when i hadn't gotten used to being away from my family during my Junior years, i'd rush to get a position beside the the school gate at exactly 12pm on the dot to watch as cars trooped in while watching out for my parents silver colored car which they used for long journeys.

Agidi jellof

The very first time I heard “Agidi jellof” was at a friend’s place. Her mum had just finished preparing lunch and when it was time to eat, I was like “Choi!!! Naija people don come again with their potty :s…which one come be "agidi jellof" again na!?(In my mind though…hehehe!!!!)”.
The sight looked appetizing but since that was my very first time at my friend’s place and I had taken a glass of juice earlier on, i didn't want to look like a "gluttonomo"(you know the normal procedure na! babe suppose form small ;) ) I had to bring up the “I’m not hungry excuse” while deep inside my tummy was making funny “cranky” noises (Mehnn!!! The babe never chop since morning…Infact! Hunger dey almost Scatter my belle for there). As a typical naija woman, the mum pleaded and pleaded to the extent that I had to form “Okay ma! Lemme take it home”.

How to extract Palm fruit oil (Aku/ banga)

To make certain types of Native soups, the knowledge of extracting palm fruit oil (oil palm)has to be employed. Being a Lazy city girl *Coughs* I usually try to skip this very important step in cooking by taking the shortcut (Using Palm oil) when cooking soups like ora, utazi e.t.c (Can't do that for banga though :) ) which makes the soup taste less like its “original” counterpart. But when I’m in my home town, I really can’t escape this step because everything has to be done in due process.

How to make Eko/Agidi

Agidi could be referred to as Nigeria’s wobbly Jello like meal. It’s prepared just the way pap is with just a little difference. Once you’ve prepared your pap from scratch or probably bought the wet corn starch (pap/ogi/Akamu) from the market then you are ready to make Agidi. If you are outside Nigeria, you can make use of corn flour to get the same result.
