How to remove periwinkle from it's shell without cracking open

During my recent trip to the market, i stopped by the periwinkle sellers shop. The pathway all through that path of the market was paved with periwinkle shells and i couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of the occupants. This practice is used as a way to recycle waste from the seafood section of the market as the seashell pathway gave the market a clean mud free look. The shells do not hold water and neither do they retain imprints from shoes therefore, they make a great alternative to gravel. Since this post is mainly about periwinkle and not the shell, let's get to the juicy path which is how to remove the periwinkles without cracking the shell open.
